Fire briefly delays Westerdam cruise

A small boiler room fire briefly delayed a scheduled voyage of Holland America Line’s Westerdam over the weekend.

The fire occurred a little over an hour after the ship’s 4 p.m. departure from Seattle on June 28. It was extinguished, but the ship returned to Seattle in an abundance of caution, a company statement said.

The ship’s hotel services were fully operational at all times, HAL said.

HAL said an assessment was completed and the ship was cleared to sail by the U.S. Coast Guard and Lloyd’s Register. The ship departed at 10 a.m. on June 29.

Because of the delay, HAL cancelled a scheduled port call in Sitka, Alaska.

Guests will receive an onboard credit of $250 per stateroom, as well as a credit toward a future cruise equal to 25% of the base cruise fare they paid.
