"RCI" Imposter and "DOJ" (gov.) Impersonators caught in Timeshare Fraud Scheme
Back in July of 2014 when Gregory Fusca was sentenced to 170 months for timeshare fraud, it was a sign that these thieves were beginning to get cracked down on by authorities. These timeshare aftermarket imposters were caught claiming to be from the United States Department of Justice and/or State of Florida employees.
IMPOSTER COMPANY — NOT WYNDHAM’S “RCI”
This timeshare scam posed as RCI for the trading timeshare vacations. RCI is the world’s largest timeshare exchange service (an owner’s bank to trade vacations), and is affiliated with Wyndam Vacation Resorts the World largest timeshare corporation.
TIMESHARE FRAUD – IMPERSONATING THE DOJ
Impersonating a “DOJ” attorney or other government official can be a crime all by itself. Worse still, the poor victims are promised hope and salvation from their timeshare dilemma, where the high pressure sales reps “say” they will get “restitution payments” as victims of earlier “timeshare frauds” [OFTEN caused by the same group of fraud companies hiding out under different names]. The one catch, and it always seems to be the case, is that the victims are always required to send advanced fees. This is the worst Predatory Sales Abuse, because people need to trust the DOJ and others in government as Consumer Protectorates, and when imposters break that trust bond, they deserve prison sentences so long that it never happens again.
POPULAR PLACES CROOKS FOCUS ON
Florida is just one of the places where timeshare fraud happens. Where there are vacationer resorts there are posing crooks (either physically there in the city like Fusca was, or somewhere else in an undisclosed location pretending to be from that area). Places in the Sunshine State (like Palm Beach for example) aren’t the only places in the U.S. where homeowners have multiple vacation intervals, points, or memberships (i.e. timeshares) that crooks like Fusca promise they can sell for them. For example, you may be a timeshare owner with property in Paradise Island in the Bahamas or a timeshare in Lahaina, Hawaii. Maybe you decided to get your timeshare at Newport Coast, California or Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. You might have purchased a Vacation Club Membership in Cancun, Mexico or Aruba. If you are a fan of populated areas that are filled with city nightlife and excitement, you may have bought your deeded timeshare years ago at one of the top destinations (that isn’t a beach property) at a timeshare such as the Manhattan Club in New York City. Leading destinations like these are the places where authorities are beginning to take their investigations quite seriously, to crack down on thieves who are trying to attain long call lists in order to commit timeshare fraud.
When people first buy their timeshare, they feel as if they will have it for the rest of their lives. They find a location in the United States or beyond that is popular among vacationers, and simply visit for a little while. During that stay, they fall in love with the destination, and say to themselves “I wouldn’t mind coming here every year.” In the moment it seems like a great idea, and the resorts who sell timeshares are more than willing to capitalize on your assumption that you’ll keep yours forever. It’s not impossible…there are some families that really do love their annual timeshare vacation spot, and wouldn’t give it up for the world. But for many that’s just not the case.
COMMON PROBLEMS AFTER BUYING
The problems that many folks run into are things that they don’t really predict will happen to them after buying the timeshare, because they are blinded by the sales pitch of the notorious sales people at the resorts. They probably didn’t intend to buy it anyway….they just wanted to sit through the presentation in order to get a free round of golf, a free dinner at a popular restaurant, or a spa treatment. But, by the time they walk out of there, they now own a one. They weren’t thinking about the cost of the commute each year, special assessments, maintenance fees, etc. All they saw right then was that beautiful place where the property is located, but sharks such as Gregory Fusca are simply waiting for them to get tired of owning it. A copy of the press release of his conviction may be found on the website of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida at http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/fls.
