Travel Top 5: World’s most popular honeymoon destinations
Paris may be a one of the most romantic cities in the world, not to mention the most visited, but when it comes to honeymoon destinations, it doesn’t even rate.
So where do newlyweds travel? Popular social-networking site Facebook recently crunched its check-in numbers to pinpoint the world’s most popular honeymoon destinations.
They did it by identifying couples that logged on to Facebook that both posted a marriage event in 2014 and checked into a location within two weeks of their wedding date, excluding check-ins that were within 32 kilometres of their home town.
The study uncovered some interesting tidbits, like the fact that South Korean honeymooners travel the greatest distance with a median trip of 6,400 kilometres away from home.
Most newlyweds, however, do not travel such extreme distances for their honeymoons. Here are the top 5 honeymoon destinations for Facebook users of all nationalities:
1. Las Vegas, Nevada
What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas apparently holds true for newlyweds as well. The gambling mecca is not only a place to play slot machines, but is also studded with shows, restaurants and shopping, offering something for everyone. Interestingly, Sin City is much more popular with international visitors as a honeymoon destination than Americans.
2. Lahaina, Hawaii
Lahaina is the gateway to the Kaanapali and Kapalua beach resorts on Maui where honeymooners come to enjoy the sun and surf in one of the prettiest parts of Hawaii. Of the top 10 places that honeymooners flock to in the United States, five of them are in that state.
3. Honolulu, Hawaii
The resorts that line Waikiki Beach are a magnet for newlyweds. With its pleasant climate and stunning views, it’s easy to see why. The Hawaiian capital also serves as a jumping off point to other islands in America’s Polynesian playground.
4. Playa del Carmen, Mexico
Located on the Yucatan Peninsula on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, Playa and its white-sand beaches has numerous resorts catering to honeymooners. It is also a popular stop for any of them who happen to be arriving by cruise ship.
5. Cancún, Mexico
If Playa del Carmen is too crowded, just up the road you’ll find the once sleepy fishing town, but now international resort behemoth, of Cancún. Honeymooners walk barefoot in sand that is as soft as baby powder and bathe in water as warm as the air.
