The German city of Cologne offers some of Europe’s best Christmas markets, and it is still possible to fly there relatively cheaply next month. Ryanair is currently offering return flights from Stansted for £72, departing 11 December and returning 14 December. ryanair.com

Later… Eastern exploration

Explore has added Kaliningrad as a new destination in 2015. A five-day tour of the Russian enclave, which borders Poland and Lithuania, costs £739 for a 30 April departure, including flights and transfers. The itinerary takes in Kaliningrad city and Curonian Spit National Park. explore.co.uk
