5 tips to vow on getaway

A destination wedding drops the loving couple in an idyllic location to vow their love together for a lifetime. According to the Association of Bridal Consultants, five to seven percent of all weddings are at a distant location, indicating couples no longer feel obligated to tie the knot in their hometown.

A dream of saying, “I do,” in a distant locale may be just that. Just like here, legal rules must be followed there so the union earns its new status back on home turf.

Does a cherished dream of walking down the aisle on a Caribbean beach or in a Scottish castle picture just the two of you? On one hand, it can be glamorous to travel far away for this cherished wedding moment purchased as part of the honeymoon. From the other side, you and people who love and cherish you, particularly an entire family, may be ultimately disappointed if they cannot afford the destination.

These hints help make the occasion work and let you find ways to welcome people otherwise left ashore as you board the ship for your loving destiny.

ON THE ROAD TO NEAR OR FAR

1. Simplify transportation. A location near the airport saves time and transfers. Provide a way for the group to move.

2. Broaden the appeal. Choose a holiday weekend for the getaway with more time surrounding the day. Find a closer location with similar amenities, perhaps a coastal beach or water sports location in the central or upper Midwest.

3. Stay calm. Those who cater to weddings in slower-moving environments may not move at your pace. Be patient but kindly persistent.

4. Seek out discounts. Look for bridal amenities and planning resources where you stay. Check on what size a “group” must be. A date edging busy season rather than during it can be less expensive. An all-in-one site or plan may appeal to a larger group making it a family vacation on the annual budget. Supply information about other entertainment there. Provide events that bring guests together.

5. Visit location. Visit the location in advance or find people who can share their experience of it.
