Travel Daily UKAPD axe sees Caribbean pitch for business…

The Caribbean is hoping to welcome more families to the region this summer as a family of four can now save nearly £200 on air fares, due to recent changes in Air Passenger Duty (APD).

From the start of May 2015, children under 12 years are now exempt from Air Passenger Duty (APD) and this will be extended to children under 16 from March 1, 2016.

When added to the additional £56 saving as result of the four-band APD system changing to a two-band system from April 1, 2015; families will find more competitive flight prices to the region.  (All passengers travelling more than 2,000 miles will now pay the B rate abolishing the higher taxed bands where the Caribbean previously fell).

Carol Hay, director of marketing for the Caribbean Tourism Organisation said: “Families travelling to the Caribbean will really benefit from the reduction in APD.  The Caribbean is a fantastic summer destination for families and we are delighted that we are able to compete with other long haul destinations on a more level playing field.  I hope these changes will incentivise those planning a long haul holiday to experience some of the great family-friendly product in the Caribbean.”
