Hotel builds in Mexico, Caribbean up in April

As of last month, there were
almost 30,000 Mexico and Caribbean hotel rooms in the development pipeline,
marking an 11.4% increase from a year earlier, according to STR. Breaking out
rooms specifically under construction, the region’s number of rooms rose 1.3%
from a year earlier, the report said.

The STR data comprises projects
that are under contract — in the construction stage, the final planning stage
and the planning stage — but does not factor in projects not yet confirmed.

Upscale properties lead the
way with 6,901 rooms under development, followed by luxury (6,586 rooms), upper-midscale
(4,977 rooms) and upper-upscale (4,475 rooms).

The luxury segment was far
ahead of all other segments when it came to rooms under construction, with 4,240 units.
Upper-midscale and upscale followed with 2,120 and 2,008 rooms, respectively.
