Royal Caribbean cruise ship catches fire – Channel3000.com – WISC
Twenty-one people were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out early Thursday on Royal Caribbean’s Splendour of the Seas, according to the cruise line’s tweets.
The fire started in one of the ship’s two engine rooms as it was sailing toward Argostoli, a town on the Greek island of Kefalonia. The fire was extinguished, and all systems on board are functional, according to Royal Caribbean.
One guest and 19 crew members were treated for smoke inhalation and released. One crew member was still being treated Thursday, according to Royal Caribbean.
The ship will bypass its port call in Argostoli and continue on to its next scheduled stop in Venice, the cruise line said. Splendour of the Seas is on the tail end of a seven-night sailing that departed Venice on October 17.
Consumer advocate Clark Howard was on board the ship, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“We had a severe engine fire that lasted just under two hours,” Howard said in a voice recording he shared with his colleagues at WSB radio.
