Carnival-owned Fathom to update travel agents on plans for Cuba, DR social …

Representatives from Carnival Corp.’s newest cruise brand Fathom will be in Fort Lauderdale Monday with updates on the cruise lines’ social-impact cruises, including efforts to establish service to Cuba.

The Fathom team will speak to local travel agents about the so-called “purposeful” cruises the company is launching next year, beginning with trips from Miami to the Dominican Republic in April. The new cruise outfit hopes to begin cruises to Cuba in May, pending approval by the Cuban government.

The free program runs noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina hotel at 1881 S.E. 17th St.

Fathom, which launched in June, plans to package cruises for social causes, such as volunteer work, educational enrichment and cultural immersion.

Despite President Obama’s decision last year to allow more trade and diplomatic ties between the U.S. and Cuba, travel for pleasure remains prohibited under the U.S.’s long-established trade embargo against the communist nation.
