Fathom’s first cruise is canceled

Fathom canceled its first cruise to the Dominican Republic on Monday after being informed by the U.S. Coast Guard that its ship the Adonia would require additional tests before leaving the dock.

Fathom officials briefed passengers about the cancellation at a terminal at Port Miami, saying they would get full refunds, credits toward a future cruise and reimbursement for transportation and lodging expenses.

A Periscope video of the briefing was posted by a passenger, actress and TV personality Lizza Monet Morales. In it, an unidentified Fathom official reads a brief statement telling passengers that additional testing of the ship will be required “and as a result we regrettably must cancel our sailing.”

“We know this is very disappointing to all of you as it is terribly disappointing to us.”

The sailing had been scheduled to depart on April 10 for a one week “soft launch,” according to Fathom. The ship had come from drydock after being converted from use in the United Kingdom by PO Cruises, another Carnival brand.

It was the first time the U.S. Coast Guard was able to board the vessel to check its features against the agency’s safety standards.
