Fast-growing MSC Cruises on Wednesday ordered two giant new ships that will debut in 2021 and 2023, respectively.
Measuring 169,380 tons, the “Seaside EVO” vessels will be larger versions of the line’s new Seaside Class ships, which measure 153,516 tons, and rank among the biggest cruise vessels in the world.
The first of MSC’s Seaside Class ships, MSC Seaside, is debuting this week in Italy, and a second vessel in the series, MSC Seaview, arrives next summer.
All of the vessels are being built in Italy by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.
MSC previously had announced plans for a third vessel in the Seaside Class to debut in 2021. But as part of Wednesday’s announcement, MSC said that ship would not be built, with its construction slot at Fincantieri being taken by the first of the new Seaside EVO vessels. As a result, the total number of ships on the way for MSC only is growing by one with the new orders.
The new Seaside EVO ships will have more cabins than the initial Seaside Class vessels as well as larger versions of the line’s signature Yacht Club area for passengers in top suites.
The new ships will carry up to 5,646 passengers — nearly 500 more than the initial Seaside Class vessels.
Currently operating 14 ships, MSC is in the midst of a massive growth spurt that now includes the addition of at least 10 more vessels by 2026. The company’s passenger capacity is set to nearly triple over the coming decade.
After debuting this week in Italy, the new MSC Seaside will sail to Miami where it will operate year-round voyages to the Caribbean and Bahamas starting at $539 per person. The ship will be christened in Miami in late December.
MSC Seaside is the second new MSC ship to debut this year. An even larger vessel, the 171,598-ton MSC Meraviglia, arrived in June. Meraviglia is the fourth largest cruise ship in the world and can carry up to 5,714 passengers.
