Tornos News | CLIA: Latest trends in cruise travel during 2018

Nine out of ten American cruise passengers said they would repeat a cruise “probably or definitely,” with cost playing a small role in choosing this type of holiday.

The cruise sector acquires loyal travelers with travel agencies being the main booking channel.

These are some of the conclusions drawn from the report of the International Association Cruise, CLIA on trends in cruise travel in 2018.

The report is based on research that was conducted on a sample of 792 cruise tourists and 813 travelers who did not choose the cruise as the first vacation option, with 90% coming from the US and 10% from Canada. The main trends for the new year are as follows:

  • 66% of travelers who considered cruise as their first option had annual incomes of less than $ 100,000, and 70% of those had annual incomes in excess of $ 200,000.
  • One third of cruise tourists (33%) have an average annual income per household, less than $ 80,000 and 50% of those at least $ 100,000.
  • Millennials seek luxury cruises and almost a quarter (24%) have sailed on a luxury cruise during the last three years.
  • Millennials who will surely make a cruise booking in their next holiday rose from 63% in 2017 to 70% this year.
  • Cruise trips with friends was a top trend in cruise travel during 2017.
  • Cruise travelers elect to travel with friends, companions or children.
  • In 2017, more travelers made a holiday with the main goal of spending time with the family compared to 2016. Cruise tourists are loyal audiences, with more than half (58%) considering this type of holiday ideal and rates stable compared to last year.
  • River cruises offer a high level of satisfaction according to 81% of travelers, sea cruises satisfy 73% of travelers, followed by hotels and resorts (62%).
  • On average, 41% of cruise travelers reported interest in services for children, such as babysitting and programs for children and adolescents but only 13% use these services.
  • Only 32% want fun on board but more than 70% have fun on board.
  • Millennials love to experience new things and new tastes on cruise trips.
  • All ages except for Gen X- return to destinations visited for the first time on a cruise.
  • Travel agencies play a decisive role in inspiration for cruise travel, vacation planning and decision making on which cruise to elect.
  • Cruise travelers use travel agencies twice as much as land holiday travelers (70% to 37%). Most Americans cruise on the cruise.
