ABOUT JIM MELLENDICK
Resides in:
Just moved to Howard County in August. I grew up in Catonsville and it’s great to be back in the Maryland area after four years in Virginia.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in finance from Loyola University Maryland; Mt St. Joe in Baltimore for High School
If you had not chosen banking as a profession, what profession would you choose and why?
Two options come to mind. Nonprofit mentorship – I’ve been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters for the last 6 years as a mentor, then board member and treasurer. I enjoy having a positive impact on both kids and young adults through mentorship and fundraising to support the mission of nonprofits focused on mentorship. General manager/front office position with a professional sports organization. I am passionate about both business and sports and it would be fun to combine those two interests in my career. The closest I came was selling tickets for the Orioles in college (which was not an easy task in the early 2000s!)
Favorite vacation:
My honeymoon last November. My wife, Kate, and I were fortunate to get married shortly before the pandemic and have the opportunity to travel to Europe for our honeymoon. We visited the UK, Spain, Portugal, France and Italy, ending in Rome with a golf cart tour through the city – this was one of the many highlights of the trip.
When I want to relax, I … :
Play tennis, travel with my wife, read business/psychology/sports books, watch the Ravens and Orioles with family and friends.
Favorite books:
Two favorite books: “How Champions Think: in Sports and in Life,” by Dr. Bob Rotella; “Emotional Intelligence 2.0,” by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves
Favorite quotations:
“If you think you are leading and turn around to see no one following, then you are just taking a walk.” – Benjamin Hooks and “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” – Henry Ford
