Brazil: Federal Strike Slows Airport, Highway and Port Operations

Federal police joined other government employees on strike Aug. 10, causing significant delays at Brazil’s international air terminals, including Sao Paulo, Rio do Janeiro and Porto Alegre. Passengers faced long lines, and import/export activity slowed to a trickle since federal staff oversees customs and health inspections in addition to checking passports. The nationwide work stoppage over low wages has also affected major highways and ports, where as many as 150 cargo ships were stranded—at a daily cost of $40,000 U.S. per vessel—awaiting federal clearance. A wave of public sector strikes, which began with university professors in May, has grown to encompass 20 federal offices and up to 350,000 civil servants, with no resolution in sight.
