Philadelphia is one of the biggest cities in Pennsylvania. Its geography is composed mainly of plains and different bodies of water slice across it specifically major rivers like the Delaware river. Many people come to the city because of the history of Philadelphia, its culture, the landmarks and a lot of other attractions.

People have so many reasons to come visit Philadelphia. On top of it all is the rich culture that it can offer. There are so many museums all around the city that will take you back in time. These historical places do not jest tell the story of Philadelphia but of the entire country as well.

The city also holds various parks, museums, and business centers which makes it one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country. Here’s a brief look back at the history of Philadelphia

The first known settlers of Philadelphia are the Delaware Indians. By the 17th century European explorers reached the Delaware valley and the first ones to put up a settlement in Philadelphia as we know it today are the Dutch. Various structures and forts were built to make a colony. This area covered present-day New Jersey and Philadelphia.

Soon after, the colony has already established a set of laws, a court and its own set of practices. The settlement had an autonomous government.

But in 1681 the colony had to be ceded to William Penn. This was done to partially pay of the debt of Charles II of England. Yet in order to keep peaceful relations, Penn still had to buy the land from the American Locals. Penn gave the settlement the name Philadelphia which was greek for love or friendship and brotherhood. Freedom of religion was one of the biggest contributions of Penn to Philadelphia. From 1790-1800 Philadelphia was the temporary capital of the United states until the White house and the Capitol were completed in Washington DC. But the city is still a major center of business and trade until today. The history of Philadelphia has helped the city grow better over the years until today.
