The Nevada del Ruiz volcano, located in a national park about 80 miles west of Bogota, erupted Nov. 9 with a six-mile column that dropped a layer of ash over the Tolima and Caldas regions. The government has placed surrounding communities on red alert, although no evacuations have been ordered at this time. The volcano, which has been rumbling for several months, is known as one of the world’s deadliest and most volatile. Its last major eruption, in 1985, buried the nearby town of Armero and killed at least 25,000 people. The U.S. Embassy in Bogota has advised its citizens to avoid traveling near the area if possible, and to monitor local media for updates.
