Philippines: Updated Travel Warning from U.S. Dept. of State

The U.S. Dept. of State has issued an updated travel warning for the island nation to reflect ongoing security issues, particularly in the Sulu Archipelago and the southern island of Mindanao. U.S. citizens should continue to avoid non-essential travel to the Sulu region due to the high threat of kidnapping of international travelers, and violence linked to insurgency and terrorism. Extreme caution is recommended if traveling to parts of Mindanao, where criminal gangs have clashed sporadically with the Philippine army, particularly in rural areas, and terrorist groups have kidnapped international travelers and carried out bombings that resulted in injuries and deaths. A state of emergency is in effect in Cotabato City and the provinces of Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat, while safety and security conditions are more stable in the urban centers of Davao City, General Santos City, and Cagayan de Oro City. On a positive note, peace talks are ongoing between the government and the island’s main insurgent group. More information is available at http://travel.state.gov.
