Where to See Sea Turtles in the Caribbean – About
I’ve swum with dolphins and manatees, but each time was in an aquarium — not exactly the ideal situation for me or, especially, the animals. Maybe that’s why my favorite “swim with” experience was a recent excursion to swim with sea turtles arranged by The Club resort in Barbados.
Sea turtles seem elusive when you encounter them while you are just snorkeling around or diving, but throw in (literally) some bread and fish scraps and they’ll apparently come cruising in from all directions for a snack. That’s how it worked in Barbados, anyway, and those of us fortunate enough to be splashing around amid the feast got to see the surprisingly graceful turtles swimming and feeding right below and next to us, close enough to (sometimes) touch.
Across the Caribbean there are a number of places where you can swim with turtles as well as watching mother turtles lay their eggs, babies hatch and make their way from the beach back to the sea, and refuges that raise endangered sea turtles then release them back into the wild:
