Amadeus River Cruises (0888 829 1394; amadeusrivercruises.co.uk),
sold in the UK through Perl River Cruises (0125 2714 477; perlrivercruises.com),
has a far superior product but can still come within budget. An eight-day
cruise on the Rhine this year, sailing from Amsterdam to Basel, costs from
£945 per person departing on October 2. CroisiEurope (0208 3281
281; croisieurope.co.uk),
a French company, has a similar route – Amsterdam to Strasbourg – from £989
per person for seven days departing on September 30, 2014. On both,
excursions and gratuities will cost extra.

Bear in mind that prices are low because you are travelling out of season,
when the weather might not be at its best. Riviera Travel (0128 3742 300; rivieratravel.co.uk)
has eight days on the Rhône
in France from £849 per person including flights but it is sailing on
November 3, 2014.

Keep a look out also for special deals and late availability. Europe’s newest
river-cruise line Emerald Waterways (0800 280 8798; emeraldwaterways.co.uk)
has a launch offer of £500 per person off most departures. It means an
eight-day Christmas
markets cruise
on the Danube departing on December 8, 2014 comes just
inside budget, from £999 per person including flights if you book by August
29.
