Dong people, also known as the Gael(in their own language) or the Am people, is a ethnic minority group in southern China. The word “Dong” means ” Stream cave”, as a matter of fact, many of the local places are still called Dong even today. Stepping in the village, the first thing comes into sight is the here is an ancient stone steps built in Ding dynasty, about 240 years ago. It is 2 kilometers long, 2 meters in width, with 528 steps. Dong people are all natural singers. No one knows how come Dong people get such amazing voice. Taking a random walk at the riverbank, chances are great you might hear some nice singing sound. Dong people likes to live in wooden house along the riverside. A local guy tells us a sad love story. About five hundreds years ago, a guy fell in love with a girl because of her heavenly singing voice. It was love at the first sight, but the girl told him there was no way they could be together cuz she lived a hundred mile away from him. He said, I wouldn’t marry to another girl in this life other than you. She believed him and started waiting for him. Unfortunately, the guy’s parents didn’t agree with their marriage. Broken-hearted, he hung himself on a tree. The next day, the girl got the news and killed herself too.
