Woman Keeps Promise of Marrying Herself on 40th Birthday

Who needs a man when you can marry yourself?

Well, that’s what Yasmin Eleby was thinking when she married herself to celebrate her 40th birthday. She made a pledge to herself that if she wasn’t married by the age of 40, she’d wed herself.

The ceremony took place on Jan. 3 at the Houston Museum of African American Culture, where her friends and family gathered around for the occasion.

Eleby had a huge cake and 10 bridesmaids by her side. She performed a rendition of R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly,” and her sister – who is a minister – officiated the service.

They newlywed took to Facebook to share “the plethora of emotions” she felt about the beautiful occasion.

“I was overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support that was shown to me during my celebration of love and life,” wrote Eleby.

She continued, “You are not too old and it’s not too late to try something different, learn a new skill, travel to exciting places, etc…. Don’t be afraid to take risks.”

As for the honeymoon, Eleby is planning to travel to Laos, Cambodia and Dubai!
