Six top spots to visit in Bergen, scene of Fred Olsen Cruise Lines’ historic …

The ships will meet at Norway’s second city on July 28, when there will be marching bands, drummers and singers on the quayside to greet them.

Passengers booked on the ships, which will all be cruising the Norwegian fjords, will be able to visit all four and enjoy free drinks and canapés, live bands and deck parties in the afternoon before the 6pm departure with a traditional water canon send-off.

Nearly 4,000 guests will be in Bergen that day, and here are six of the top spots they – and anybody else visiting Bergen – should try to see.

UNESCO-listed wharf: Take a stroll around the shops, cafes and restaurants that now inhabit the old wharf district, painted in the familiar Scandinavian tones of mustard, white and bull’s blood red.

The original 12th century Hanseatic Trading League wharf warehouses have been burnt down and rebuilt many times but these tall, narrow buildings are their natural successors and the main reason tourists visit Bergen.

Bryggens Museum: Bryggen means old wharf, and this museum was built over the site of the first settlement in Bergen to protect the ancient foundations.

The remains were discovered during excavations in 1955 and the museum also has many medieval artefacts discovered on the site during the excavations. See www.bymuseet.no
