Documents Required for US Passport for Children

As per travel laws, person travelling outside the country needs to have a valid passport. This includes children as well as they need passport if they are willing to leave the country or entry to another country. However, the process of application of US Passport for children is quite simple, it does involve a lot of efforts to collect and file the documents in a correct manner.

Once the passport is issued, it is valid for 5 years from the date of issue till the child turns 18. It means that the passport issued before the age of 18 years needs to be reissued when either of the following comes first (whichever is earlier basis):

• If the child has reached 18 years of age, its passport is no more valid; or
• Passport reaches its expiry data after completing the stipulated time frame of 5 years

In order to apply for a passport, it is required to know about the application procedure and the documents that need to be submit at the nearest passport office.

Application Form

For getting started to apply for the passport, DS Form 11 needs to be completed with valid particulars. All required fields, i.e., the fields marked with (*) mark are mandatory and must be filled with correct data. Parents must fill the form carefully with utmost attention as any sort if incorrect information can lead to rejection of application and it needs to be refilled.

Identification Proof

DS Form 71 is required along with the passport application. Identification proof needs to be attached along with. This could be anything from Birth Registration Form to the School admission form or ID card; or any valid ID that have the child’s photograph attached on it with name, age and the name of the father or mother or both.

Proof of Citizenship

In order to apply for US Passport for children, it is mandatory to prove the citizenship status and this can be done by submitting either or all of the following documents:

• Naturalization certificate
• Report of Consular Birth abroad
• Original birth certificate with raised seal
• Expired US Passport previous passport

Apart from this, there are other documents as well that includes, passport size photographs and authorization letter.
