The Best Places to Propose, According to ‘The Bachelor’
As fans wait to see who Ben Higgins chooses as his bride, we take a look at some of the amazing proposal locations over the years.
Each season millions tune in to ABC’s The Bachelor to watch a love story unfold over eight weeks, all culminating in one incredibly drawn-out proposal (usually on the beach). Whether Ben Higgins will pop the question to JoJo or Lauren B. on March 14 remains to be seen, but the backdrop for the big moment will definitely take place in a stunning, exotic locale.
The final episodes of the 20th season take place on the sands of Jamaica, offering viewers a glimpse inside the fantasy suites at Sandals Ochi Beach Resort and Sandals Royal Plantation. It’s just one of many, many idyllic destinations that serve as grandiose proposal locales. Looking for a few ideas? These are the five loveliest proposal locations from the show:
St. Lucia
This Caribbean gem is equally rich in natural wonders—crystal blue waters! Green mountains!—and top-rated hotels, making is the perfect place for Jake Pavelka to get down on one knee on season 14. He got engaged to Vienna Girardi overlooking the Pitons at Jade Mountain Resort. (Already engaged? One of our editors went on her honeymoon to St. Lucia and stayed in an open-concept hotel room.)
Switzerland
Beachy locations are typical for the show’s finale, so fans were surprised by the snowy escape used for Ben Flajnik’s season 16 proposal to Courtney Robertson. The two headed to Zermatt, Switzerland, where the big moment took place in the shadows of the Matterhorn. Though they stayed at a private chalet to celebrate their engagement, much of the finale was filmed as the beautiful and historic Grand Hotel Zermatterhof in the center of the ski town.
New Zealand
And who could forget the location of season 13’s scandalous proposal, where Jason Mesnick popped the question to Melissa Rycroft and then changed his mind and chose Molly Malaney instead? The drama unfolded on one of the series’ more far-flung locales: New Zealand’s Bay of Islands. Known for its undeveloped beaches and Maori historic artifacts, Bay of Islands is actually comprised of 144 relatively untouched islands. While there are plenty of romantic spots to choose for a proposal, the show used Eagle’s Nest Luxury Lodge as a home base for the final episodes. The resort was inspired by the works of Frank Lloyd Wright and is just a short walk from a private beach and the Flagstaff Historic Hill Reserve.
South Africa
Brad Womack’s proposal to Emily Maynard on season 15 took place at Ernie Els Wine Estate in Cape Town. Rolling green hills and mountains in the distance set the scene for the big moment before the couple retired to the One Only Resort less than an hour away, on the coast of the continent.
Chiang Rai
The breathtaking resort used for Sean Lowe’s season 17 proposal to Catherine Giudici is the epitome of Thai luxury. Pa Sak Tong Villa boasts manicured grounds and incredible views of the valley—plus it’s perfectly tucked away from prying eyes. With overwater gazebos and tropical gardens, the hardest thing would be choosing an exact place to pop the question.
