Fredericksburg, Texas

This small town has surprising German roots and old-time residents even refer to it as Fritztown. But the Magic Mile (a shopping scene with more than 150 stores) and some of the best wine tasting in Texas are what keeps the tourists coming back.

Today’s honeymooners are seeking adventures not far from home.

That’s according to a Westin study released earlier this year, which reveals honeymoon trends in North America over the last five years.

The data, gathered in cooperation with market research firm StudyLogic, shows key findings that might resonate with modern newlyweds: couples are seeking outdoorsy, adventure destinations; they’re packing in more activities in less time; and they’re staying closer to home. (Story continues below.) See the gallery above for ideas on where and what to do on a honeymoon in Texas

Since 2011, 75 percent of couples honeymooned in the U.S. and Canada, the study showed.

Couples are also looking for active trips, with honeymooners opting for exercise and healthy meals almost twice as much as couples did just five years ago.

“One of the most surprising things about the study was how many people went running on their honeymoon,” Bob Jacobs, vice president of brand management for Westin Hotels Resorts, told Skift. “Forty percent [of honeymooners] in the last five years went on at least one run during their honeymoon and they are using it as a way to decompress, disconnect, and be a tourist at the same time.”

Other key findings from the study show that 80 percent of respondents used social media to research destinations. Also, more than half say a better bed would have made for a better honeymoon.

Whatever you do, don’t skip the honeymoon. A study reported that couples who have a honeymoon are 41 percent less likely to get a divorce.

That’s reason enough to at least take a post-wedding road trip.
