Must-See Getaway Spots In South America

Growing up in Glendale gave me an opportunity to be exposed with some of the most diverse cultures in the country. On one side, I have natural born American friends, then on the other side I also have Fil-Am and Latino pals whose families have immigrated from their country to the US. And if you that eclectic mix of friends you sometimes can’t help but to talk about the beautiful culture and places from their mother land. I for myself being a passionate traveller would love to ask them about this so I can have an idea about where to go in my next trip…

And so in my next entry I am going to share to you some of the must-see getaway spots that I’ve already visited in South America and let you be the judge if going to these places will be worth it or not.

Las Lajas, Colombia – If a pilgrimage trip is what you have in mind, then this will be a perfect destination for you. Las Lajas is located right at the border going to Ecuador and it’s a definite beauty because of the ornate decorations of the building amidst the astonishing natural surroundings. Another stunning attraction of the area is the Guaitara River where waterfalls also adorn the place. The best place to visit Las Lajas is during September because many devotees would gather around to say their prayers and show their devotion to Our Lady of Rosary every 16th day of that month.

Pucon, Chile – If you want to experience authentic Andean culture with a bit of extreme on the side, then this might grab your fancy. Pucon is a dormant volcano located 485 south of the country’s capital (Santiago) and home to a fabulous ski resort in Villarica where tourists can enjoy sightseeing, skiing and other sports and outdoor activities. Just remember though, the resort is only open every July to September, so make sure to schedule your travel within these months.

Puma Punku, Bolivia – This is a must-see place for ancient alien enthusiasts. Puma Punku is a megalithic ruins found in the ancient city of Tiahuanaco. Upon reaching the area, you’ll be immediately amazed as to how these ancient people were able to construct structures with mind-boggling precision. I saw “H” blocks around the area and the stones where so cut precisely to the point that you will think that the builders were actually using power tools! I had to admit, I’m not that much of a ET fan, but I became somewhat of a believer after being in this place and found wanting for more.

Nazca Lines, Peru – Of all the mysterious sites I’ve visited, this is probably the most mysterious! Nazca lines are a group of geoglyphs found in the Nazca Dessert. On the ground, the look nothing like out of the ordinary, but when you hop aboard a plane you will get to see a lot of massive images from a hummingbird to a man waving his hands. The fact that these images are so huge you’ll immediately wonder how the heck the ancient people were able to make this. And what’s even more baffling is the fact that these images were made centuries ago and they still look the same as the day they were made! The Nazca Lines is a sure travel treat to raise your senses, but expect to get on a plane to appreciate this site even more.
