Budget airline Wind Jet abruptly cancelled all flights as of Aug. 12, stranding hundreds of furious passengers in Sicily, Rome and other major hubs at the beginning of a busy holiday period. On the verge of bankruptcy, Wind Jet had been in buyout negotiations with Alitalia, but failed to reach an agreement with the national air carrier. Popular with Europeans as a cheap way to get around the country, Wind Jet’s routes extend to 10 airports in Italy, three in Russia, and a few more across Europe. Aviation authorities set up a crisis center to help reroute travelers, stating that the 300,000 ticketed passengers scheduled to fly Wind Jet in the coming weeks could be rebooked with other airlines, at additional cost.
