Despite the theft of several masterpieces that were central to its current exhibit, Rotterdam’s Kunstal art gallery has experienced a surge of visitors—a case of “disaster tourism,” some have said. The small gallery, which does not have its own collection, made international headlines after one of the world’s biggest art heists took place there on Oct. 16. The seven paintings that were snatched from the walls, including a Picasso, a Matisse and a Monet, were on loan from a private collector and worth tens of millions of dollars. Surveillance cameras recorded the thieves’ entry and exit, but police have yet to identify or apprehend anyone. The gallery reopened its doors Oct. 18, filling the empty spaces with other works from the same collection.
