A series of violent protests erupted across the nation as Egyptians reacted angrily to President Morsi’s recent decrees, some that appear to be moving the country back toward autocracy. In the largest political crisis since Morsi took office in June, protestors have converged on Cairo’s Tahrir Square by the tens of thousands, clashing with police and forcing the nearby U.S. Embassy to close some of its services intermittently. Large and volatile protests have also been reported in Alexandria, Suez, Minya and other Nile Delta cities. Visitors are being advised to avoid protest areas, check with their consulates before traveling and monitor the situation carefully.
