About 2,000 tourists were stranded when Cyclone Evan battered the archipelago Dec. 17 with torrential rain, flash flooding and winds up to 125 mph. The storm hit the northwestern islands hardest, especially the west side of Viti Levu, the main island. With the airport closed, more than 8,000 people had to be evacuated to shelters to wait out the category-four storm. In the aftermath, the city of Lautoka resembled “a war zone,” although no deaths were reported. Cleanup efforts were underway, but disruptions to power and communication systems may continue for some time. A few days prior to hitting Fiji, the cyclone wreaked havoc in nearby American Samoa, leaving at least 14 dead.
