The U.S. State Department issued a travel alert Nov. 1, just weeks ahead of the country’s constituent assembly elections. Nepal’s government is working to ensure security during the Nov. 19 elections, but protests and general strikes, or bandhs, may occur, disrupting transit services and other tourist activities. Strikers usually try to enforce a ban on all vehicular transportation during these bandhs, and confrontations between motorists and demonstrators are possible. Tourists are advised to avoid large crowds and demonstrations during this period, as there may be violence, particularly in or near Kathmandu.
